Job Description
The Hope College Biology Department invites applications for two tenure-track, open rank positions beginning in July 2024. This may be a good opportunity for dual-career partners. The specific research areas are open and successful candidates will be able to develop vigorous, externally-funded research programs that address fundamental questions related to biology using modern technologies. Research programs should also engage undergraduate students as active collaborators; generous start-up funds support these positions. Successful candidates should also be able to teach in Introductory Biology and one or more of the following areas: Genetics, Evolutionary Biology, Developmental Biology, Human Physiology. The Biology Department at Hope College views evolution as the fundamental explanation for the diversity of life and is dedicated to the understanding and teaching of the principles of evolution. Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in biology or closely-related field
  • Postdoctoral experience is highly desired
  • Promise as an innovative and effective classroom instructor
  • Ability and willingness to teach Introductory Biology, Genetics, Evolutionary Biology, Human Physiology, and/or possibly an advanced course in area of expertise
  • Potential to build an active research program involving undergraduate students

Your research statement should include the following elements: Clearly articulated research goals and objectives, emphasizing their significance and potential impact; Summary of your research experience, including previous projects, publications, and collaborations; Explanation of how you will actively involve undergraduate students in your research activities and projects; Examples of how you communicate research findings and concepts effectively to undergraduate students, fostering their understanding and enthusiasm for the subject matter. Please limit it to five pages.
  5. Teaching statement that reflects your pedagogical approach, philosophy, and strategies. Your teaching statement should demonstrate: Clear articulation of your teaching goals and objectives; Effective methods of engaging diverse learners and promoting inclusive education; Integration of innovative teaching techniques and technologies; Description of how you would assess student learning and adapt teaching strategies accordingly; Examples of courses you have taught or plan to teach, highlighting any specialized areas of expertise. Please limit it to three pages.

This position requires remaining in a sitting or standing position for frequent periods of time; uses office machinery such as a computers, printers, copy machines; Occasionally involves moving items over 10 pounds; frequently will move between different offices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communication abilities.
