The Assistant Director assists with the overall operations of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, with the primary responsibility of initiating and supporting activities that promote student engagement; retention, sense of belonging, and success; cultural celebrations and competencies; and community involvement through leadership development and experiential learning opportunities. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Student Engagement: - Support, and enhance student development and growth through social and educational programming, with a specific focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion that supports retention, sense of belonging, and student success. Create opportunities for majority students to explore, understand, and develop cultural competencies.
Mentor/Advisor – Provide mentoring and advising; serve as a role model to multicultural student organizations in partnership with faculty and administrators.
Presentations and Workshops – Develop programs, presentations, and trainings to increase awareness, understanding, and competencies related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Campus Climate/Data Assessment – Assist in monitoring and evaluating campus climate and data related to the overall experiences and success of students, with a particular emphasis on students from ethnically diverse backgrounds. Utilize findings to make recommendations and advocate for support and resources needed to strengthen outcomes.
Marketing and Publicity – Assist in marketing and promotional materials, including print and social media, preferred.
Institutional Collaboration - Collaborate with key academic areas to promote and develop pathways for underrepresented students to thrive in all majors and programs. Work in joint programs or initiatives with Student Development to promote holistic student development with particular attention to issues of diversity and inclusion.Committee Support – Serve on internal and external committees to support the overall goals for diversity, equity, and inclusion, as deemed appropriate by supervisor.
Master's degree preferred in Higher Education, Social Work, Education, or Student Personnel Administration–supplemented with three years experience working with diverse cultures and diversity, equity, and inclusion (a combination of relevant experience & education will be considered)
Ability to be a role model and mentor to students and student leaders
Interpersonal/human relations and conflict mediation skills
Ability to manage high-stress conflict situations with emotional intelligence, maturity, and diplomacy
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with various departments
Ability to work effectively with people of diverse ages, languages, ethnic, gender and sexual orientation, disabilities, and socio-economic backgrounds
An understanding of the goals for culture, inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in the college
Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills and ability to present to racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities
Experience, familiarity with, and willingness to learn Microsoft and Google applications and social media platforms (e.g., Gmail, Google Drive, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
Experience doing quantitative and qualitative data analysis and reporting
