Starting Date: ASAP

Contract Year: July 1 - June 30

Pay Scale: $120,000 - 132,000 commensurate with experience (Prorated from July 1)



Hamilton Community Schools invites dedicated business professionals to apply for the open position of Director of Finance that's available starting in the 2022-2023 school year. This role is responsible for financial planning and budgeting, accounting, financial reports, payroll processing, employee benefits. This individual will also evaluate and oversee the work of the supervisors within the District Operations Department (Food Service, Transportation, Maintenance, Custodial).

  • Prepare and coordinate the development of district budget
  • Prepare all budget adoption recommendations and amendments for the superintendent and Board of Education 
  • Oversee all financial aspects of the district, including staff supervision
  • Identify and recommend resources to support the District School Improvement plan
  • Collaborate with Human Resources, Teaching and Learning, Special Education and all departments to identify and support staffing levels across the District
  • Serve as an integral member of the District Leadership Team
  • Maintain the financial records of the district
  • Supply periodic financial reports for the district
  • Supply financial reports as requested by appropriate persons
  • Direct the payroll processing function of the district
  • Responsible for oversee the distribution of payroll checks
  • Monitor the accounting system and internal controls of the district
  • Responsible for the overall administration and coordination of the Employee Benefits Program
  • Purchase by competitive bidding, informal quotations, and negotiation, items of supply and equipment and services necessary for the operation of the school district
  • Oversee the disbursement of district funds to vendors and the resolution of billing problems
  • Develop and maintain procedures for processing purchase orders and other financial transactions in an efficient and timely manner
  • Completes evaluations of staff under his/her supervision
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with stakeholders and acts as a problem solver when concerns arise 
  • Maintains relationships with community organizations to ensure two-way communications which foster community involvement
  • Develops an atmosphere of trust, respect, interest and enthusiasm within the school community
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent 


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

  • Bachelors or Masters degree from a four-year college or university in Accounting preferred
  • Possess a Michigan School Business Officials Chief Financial Officer Certification or willingness to obtain
  • Five years of job experience in Accounting is preferred
  • Previous experience in a school environment is preferred
  • Prior supervisory experience with implementing medical plans and fringe benefits
  • Prior knowledge of Michigan Pupil Account manual is preferred
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Effective supervisory experience preferred
  • Knowledge of software and operations of computerized financial accounting systems
  • Experience with MUNIS software preferred
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills
  • Thorough knowledge of school and State of Michigan policies and procedures
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Strong strategic visioning skills
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of organizational and management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of school programs, policies and operational needs
