The Communication Specialist is an important member of the Philanthropy and Engagement Division. Reporting to the Communications Director, the specialist will provide graphic design expertise and project management support for the entire Philanthropy and Engagement Division for communications, events, appeals and stewardship projects intended to bring alumni, families and friends into meaningful lifelong relationships with the college. Through creating customized and personalized communication, the Communication Specialist contributes to the overall philanthropy and engagement goals of the division. The Communication Specialist will add to a positive workplace environment, establishing relationships with colleagues across the Philanthropy and Engagement division and other campus partners to foster collaboration and engage alumni, families, donors and friends of the college.

As a member of a communications team, the Communication Specialist will provide graphic design expertise and will be responsible for creating compelling digital and print materials to be used across multiple channels. This team is responsible for coordinating and producing communication projects for Hope Forward, alumni and family engagement, annual philanthropy, corporate engagement, principal and planned giving, major gifts, donor relations and stewardship, and future fundraising campaigns. The team will work together to produce timely, high-quality materials that follow established brand guidelines.


  • Create and support all philanthropy projects; including proposals, solicitations and donor stewardship by providing graphic design, layout and completion of deliverables.
  • Create and support all engagement, philanthropy, and donor relations projects including invitations, proposals, appeals, presentations and reports, program promotions and event collateral by providing graphic design, layout and completion of deliverables.
  • Work closely with the Communications Director to implement a consistent process for identifying, prioritizing, and completing communication projects across the division.
  • Collaborate with Public Affairs & Marketing to develop and produce templates and graphic design elements, photos and video content for use in digital and print communications.
  • Consistently implement established brand guidelines and other communication standards for Hope College and Hope Forward.
  • Assist with other communications projects and divisional programs as assigned by the Communications Director.
  • Work closely with the Philanthropy Writer to create compelling materials that inspire action.
  • Promote and contribute to a positive, colleague team culture; embracing and advancing the values and contributions of culture and inclusive excellence.


Bachelor’s degree required. Well-qualified candidates will have at least:

  • Minimum of three years previous experience in graphic design, communication, project management or related field.
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading and communication skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Experience communicating with various target audiences through a variety of communication channels.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in project management.
  • Knowledge of print, web and other communications technologies.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite with an emphasis on InDesign.
  • Working knowledge of web design and development, and video preferred.
  • Commitment to the Christian mission of Hope College
  • Motivated, enthusiastic, collaborative and able to work independently as a part of a dynamic team.
