DNL to Host 'Walk, Run, & Roll 5K' Event

Race Will Highlight the Need for Accessible Communities in West Michigan

Disability Network Lakeshore (DNL) announced its ‘Walk, Run, & Roll’ 5K event on Wednesday. The race will kick off in downtown Holland’s Centennial Park at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 10, 2022.

Organized by DNL’s Associate Board, a group of young professionals passionate about accessibility, equality, and equity for people with disabilities, this event is designed to highlight the need for more accessible communities in Western Michigan. Participants are encouraged to take part at their own pace. The 5K will take a scenic route through downtown Holland, passing Hope College and multiple parks along the way.

Interested participants are encouraged to sign up via this GiveSignup platform. Race fee is $20 and includes a unique ‘Walk, Run, & Roll 5K’ event T-shirt. All proceeds will go to Disability Network Lakeshore’s mission of making the Lakeshore a place where everyone can participate, contribute, and belong.

Chloe Bares, the Chairperson of DNL’s Associate Board stated, “I believe the 5K will foster community and connection. It will create a space where people feel unified in a cause, expand their social circles, and meet individuals they may not have known before. There is a community on the Lakeshore advocating for those with disabilities. Ultimately, our goal is to increase the awareness of disability and accessibility in our communities.”

The nonprofit offers five core services to its consumers: Advocacy; Information and Referral; Peer Support; Skills Development; and Transition. Centered around the Independent Living philosophy, the organization believes that the power to decide how one wants to live their life should be placed in the hands of the individual, not the medical system.
