Daily schedule for 2nd and 3rd graders:
Tuesday, April 2nd is themed “Boat Day.” Ahoy mateys! From Native American birch bark canoes to today’s freighters, our waters have provided transportation and commerce for hundreds of years. We’ll explore life on the lake as we conduct experiments to learn how boats float before we build and test several boats of our own. In the afternoon, we’ll raise the Jolly Roger flag and share an exciting story about hidden pirate treasure, before weighing anchor on our own pirate treasure hunt. We’ll end the day with an afternoon snack and some nautical-themed games.
Wednesday, April 3rd is themed “Olden Days.” We’ll step back in time and discover what life was like in the early days of Holland. Campers will explore the Settlers and Cappon Houses and experience how children worked, played, and went to school. Activities include house chores, a one-room school lesson, playing with old-fashioned toys, and making tasty treats.
Thursday, April 4th is themed “Off to Oz.” Let’s go green as we salute early Holland hero, L. Frank Baum, author of The Wizard of Oz. Campers will enjoy a day packed with excerpts from the book, experiments, and crafts related to the land of Oz. We’ll send Dorothy’s house back to Oz in our wind tunnel, conduct hot air balloon experiments, make our own flying monkeys, and much more. Campers will also explore the museum with a special Wizard of Oz scavenger hunt and much more.
Daily Schedule for 4th/5th graders:
Tuesday, April 2nd is themed “The Good Old Days.” We’ll begin camp with a look back in time and discover what life was like for children in the late 1800s. Campers will race to complete spring cleaning chores, participate in an old-fashioned spelling bee, play with jacks and marbles, and much more. In the afternoon, campers will squeeze lemons to make lemonade and explore the history of Holland’s industries before making our own jar of pickles.
Wednesday, April 3rd is themed “Exploring Air & Space.” Campers will take flight as we conduct experiments and study the evolution of manned flight. In the afternoon we’ll launch into space, exploring how astronauts prepare and work in space. We’ll also look at the development of rockets that took us to the moon and beyond. Campers will make their own articulated arm, conduct an egg drop, and take on the Space Adventure challenges inside Spark!Lab Smithsonian.
Thursday, April 4th is themed “Mysteries and Invention.” We will kick the day off with a mystery. Campers will work together to solve a museum mystery while also discovering the similarities between crime-solving and museum conservation work. We’ll experiment with chromatography and other museum and crime-solving techniques to discover who dun’it. After lunch, we’ll explore the museum in search of wacky inventions before making our own crazy concoctions. Campers will participate in a Rube Goldberg Challenge and discover how accidental discoveries became great ideas!
