MiSustainable Holland: The second-annual Nature-Rich Business Spotlight has arrived
Written By: Joe Sikma, ODC Network
The Nature-Rich Business Spotlight — organized by ODC Network, the Michigan West Coast Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Holland — is back for its second edition in 2022.
The publication, available in print and online, is designed to inform sustainably minded shoppers, as well as recognize businesses and organizations doing their part and encourage others to take action.
West Michigan is emerging as a frontrunner in sustainable business leadership and innovation. Sustainability is a core value of our communities — shaping our culture, informing our behavior, and serving as a guiding principle for our personal and professional lives.
A growing wave of local organizations are pursuing opportunities to simultaneously increase prosperity, invest in our people and protect the planet.
Launched in 2020, the spotlight program was born out of ODC’s Nature-Rich Community Initiative, a moniker denoting the deep understanding of the interconnection between our natural resources and the health and wellness of residents and the local economy.
Nature-rich businesses support sustainability, resiliency, and livability.
The spotlight features 15 businesses and organizations stretching from Holland and Zeeland to Saugatuck. It recognizes organizations in three sectors: business-to-consumer, business-to-business, and government and nonprofit.
This year’s featured businesses demonstrate the possibilities of implementing sustainable practices into nearly any industry, from local eateries to companies providing renewable energy solutions across the globe.
As we collectively strive to meet the needs of today while preserving the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, we recognize that sustainable development is more about the journey than the destination. Rapidly changing technologies, circumstances, and understandings present opportunities for continuous improvement.
Being featured in the Nature-Rich Business Spotlight isn't a sustainability certification or ranking. It's a recognition of positive action and progress towards a more nature-rich community. Businesses named in 2022 include Eighth Day Farm, StrEATs Taco Kitchen, Cento Anni, Volta Power Systems, Community Action House, and Hope College — among others.
Featured businesses were identified through a public nomination and voting period. Visit outdoordiscovery.org/nature-rich-business to nominate a business or organization for 2023 or view the current spotlight.
