NEW CASA VOLUNTEERS TO PARTICIPATE IN SWEARING-IN CEREMONY

The ceremony marks the completion of a 30-hour training program. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) are trained community volunteers who are appointed by a judge to advocate for safe, permanent homes in a timely manner for children involved in abuse and neglect court proceedings.

The CASA volunteer’s role is comprised of advocating, investigating, facilitating, and monitoring. This is accomplished by weekly contact with the child, or in most cases, a sibling group of children. The CASA volunteer establishes a relationship with the child(ren) to better understand the youth’s needs, assess, and make recommendations to the court concerning the best interests of the child(ren). Additionally, the CASA volunteer appears in court approximately every 90 days.

CASAs have continued to advocate throughout the pandemic. Starting in mid-March of 2020 these meetings have been done virtually, until July at which time most went back to seeing children in person utilizing appropriate PPE and other safety precautions. Some continue to meet with the children virtually if necessary due to the medical needs of the child, resource family, or CASA volunteer. Since the pandemic started, CASA of Ottawa County has served 66 children, 12 of which are new assignments during the pandemic.

The next CASA training class is scheduled to begin in mid-October 2020. For more information on becoming a CASA volunteer, please contact casa@arborcircle.org.
