New Exhibit Opening at the Holland Museum
Opening July 15, 2022, In Service to Others: A History of Holland’s Women Missionaries will explore the varied roles of local women in the missionary field who sought to improve lives through expansion of education and healthcare to communities across the globe.
“This exhibit features firsthand accounts from women in our area and whose stories we are caretakers of at the Museum,” says Executive Director, Ricki Levine. “We feel privileged to share their perspectives and host new community programs about this exhibit.”
In 1826, the first single female missionary in the United States was appointed to serve overseas. In the years following, an influx of women found purpose through missionary work in ways that they were often denied at home. Holland’s community was no exception to this trend. In the 1880s the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society was formed, and in the decades since, Holland’s women have served as doctors and educators, fundraisers, and leaders in communities across the globe.
