Operation September Freedom Honoring WWII Heroes at West Michigan Regional Airport

Holland, Mich. – Operation September Freedom (OSF) a national effort by non-profit Dream Flights to honor 1,000+ World War II veterans with free Dream Flights in restored Boeing Stearman biplanes, is landing in Holland on August 3 to honor 6 members of the Greatest Generation. The public is welcome to watch the Dream Flight event.

The event will take place at West Michigan Regional Airport and start at 8:30am.

According to Dream Flights Founder Darryl Fisher, the tour name, Operation September Freedom, represents the Sept. 2, 1945 signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, which effectively ended WWII. The logo is designed using elements significant to the signing aboard the USS Missouri. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

“Of the 16 million Americans who served in WWII, only an estimated 100,000 are still living - the youngest 92,” said Fisher. “Operation September Freedom is our last opportunity to thank the men and women who served in the war that changed the world. The freedoms each of us enjoys today are due to their sacrifice and bravery.”

Dream Flights has honored more than 4,200 veterans and seniors living in long-term care communities since 2011. This is the first mission to honor veterans who served in a particular war.

“We’re honored to have Operation September Freedom and the veterans from Covenant Living at West Michigan Regional Airport,” said Aaron Thelenwood, Director of WMRA. “We can’t wait to honor our veterans and see them take flight in the restored Boeing Stearman Biplanes.”

Dream Flights pilots, who primarily fly for major airlines and are active duty or retired military veterans themselves, volunteer their time to fly these veterans in the country's largest fleet of restored/fully operational Stearman bi-planes. During the 20-minute flight, Dream Flyers experience the freedom and exhilaration of soaring 1,000 feet in the air in an iconic, open-cockpit-biplane.

Operation September Freedom runs Aug. 1-Sept. 30, 2021. Mid-campaign, Sept. 8-10, 2021, Dream Flight crews will rendezvous at the 50th National Stearman Fly-in in Galesburg, Ill., to honor WWII veterans with Dream Flights. After, the crews will return to their home bases, stopping in towns along the way to continue honoring WWII veterans with flights.
