Ottagan Addictions Recovery (OAR) announces new name!
As OAR celebrates its 50th anniversary and prepares for the next 50 years, our board and staff have been reflecting on our accomplishments and the work that still needs to be done. We decided the organization needs an identity that reflects that key moment when a person struggling with addiction makes the critical first step toward a healthy and full life of happiness and promise.
We are excited to announce, that effective August 1, 2021, Ottagan Addictions Recovery, Inc. became Reach for Recovery, Inc.
In December 1971, a small but impassioned group of west Michigan residents whose lives had been impacted by alcoholism and addiction, came together to form Ottagan Alcoholism Rehabilitation, or OAR as it would come to be called. They chose Ottagan to represent the two counties, Ottawa, and Allegan, that would be the primary beneficiaries of OAR services. The name has changed a couple times over the years but the acronym, OAR, has remained the same.
A lot has happened in the past 50 years. The medical community came to understand addiction as a brain disease, not a moral shortcoming, and we now refer to the disease as Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Cocaine and later crack cocaine became prevalent in the 70’s and 80’s. And then the opioid epidemic wreaked havoc on our nation beginning in the late 80’s and continuing through today. Through it all, OAR has provided professional and compassionate treatment to and for those struggling with SUD.
OAR started as a “sobriety house” for men. Later, a home for women was established along with outpatient counseling centers in Holland and Grand Haven. Today, OAR serves more than 1,000 people every year. And in addition to Ottawa and Allegan, many OAR clients come from other counties such as Kent and Muskegon.
To preserve precious resources, the rollout of the new name will be phased, and should be completed by yearend with new email addresses, signage, and website.
As a key constituent, we want you to be the first to hear this exciting news. Please be assured that all of us at Reach for Recovery will remain committed to the ideals and mission of our founders, to facilitate recovery and enhance the wellbeing of individuals facing addictions regardless of their ability to pay, thereby restoring lives, healing families, and benefiting everyone in our communities.
