West Ottawa named a ‘Best Community for Music Education’

HOLLAND TWP. — West Ottawa Public Schools has received national recognition for its music education.

The district made the list of 2023 “Best Communities for Music Education” by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. The honor recognizes district’s for “outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders and their support for music education as part of a well-rounded education for all children.”

“The music program at West Ottawa is a place where our students learn and grow in so many different ways,” Chris Meyer, music chair, wrote in a statement. “This award helps validate all of the hard work by our staff and students and is a testament to the support of our administration and community.”

This is the first time West Ottawa has received the recognition. The district is one of 16 in Michigan to receive the honor and one of three in Ottawa County, along with Spring Lake and Jenison.

“We are thrilled with this NAMM recognition of the music community at West Ottawa,” said WOPS Superintendent Tim Bearden. “As one of our board members said, this award validates and confirms what we in West Ottawa already knew — we have a passionate and talented group of student musicians, teachers and support staff that make ours one of the best school music programs anywhere. We are grateful for this recognition and proud of our students and staff."
