Zeeland’s Good Neighbor Day

Zeeland’s Good Neighbor Day

Zeeland’s Good Neighbor Day

National Good Neighbor Day takes place each year on September 28th.  This national campaign was created to encourage communities to build stronger relationships in the areas they live and to create an opportunity for neighbors to get to know each other better. Zeeland plans to join in on this national campaign this year.

National Good Neighbor Day was created in the early 1970s by Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana. In 1978, United States President Jimmy Carter issued Proclamation 4601: “As our Nation struggles to build friendship among the peoples of this world, we are mindful that the noblest human concern is concern for others. Understanding, love and respect build cohesive families and communities. The same bonds cement our Nation and the nations of the world. For most of us, this sense of community is nurtured and expressed in our neighborhoods where we give each other an opportunity to share and feel part of a larger family…I call upon the people of the United States and interested groups and organizations to observe such day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.” Source – www.goodneighborday.com

The Good Neighbor Pledge - I pledge to be the "good neighbor." With the goal of becoming a more connected and caring community, I will be a person who lives with kindness and concern for my neighbors. I’ll take the first step by connecting with neighbors and introduce myself. I will practice the "good neighbor mindset" to make connections, invitations, stay aware, and be available to my neighbors. Good neighbors make great neighborhoods.

We would like to introduce the Good Neighbor Day Pledge into Zeeland City and the surrounding area; and anyone that considers themselves a Zeelander.  Although we know that there are many of good neighbors and neighborhoods in Zeeland, we would like to bring more awareness to this particular pledge and challenge our community to take increased steps to become great neighbors.  During the current pandemic we have found ourselves at home more than ever, therefore there is no better time than the present to strengthen our culture of great neighborhoods.

The Good Neighbor Day campaign will begin on September 1 with the opportunity for Zeeland community members to pick up a pennant flag to proudly display outside of their home to show that they are going to take steps to be a good neighbor.  The pennant flags are located at City Hall as well as the Howard Miller Library.  Along with the pennant flag, participants will receive a list of Good Neighbor Day ideas.  Community members will have until September 28th to return their completed form in order to be listed on a plaque displayed downtown that proclaims that they have made the commitment to be a Good Neighbor.  Completed forms can be turned into both City Hall and the Howard Miller Library.

Some examples of suggested actions are:

Help your neighbor with yardwork

Handwrite a note of appreciation

Offer to run an errand

Pick up litter

Reduce your speed on neighborhood streets

Clean up after your pet
