8th Grade Student Support Specialist
Hamilton Middle School is seeking a positive, flexible, and student-centered individual to serve as a Student Support Specialist during the 2026-2027 school year. Due to our middle school construction project, our 8th-grade students will be housed at Hamilton High School for one year. This position will play an important role in supporting students throughout the school day while helping maintain a safe, welcoming, and productive learning environment.
The Student Support Specialist will be based in the middle school office space located at the high school and will provide supervision, student support, and assistance with the many unexpected situations that naturally arise throughout the school day. This individual will work closely with the Dean of Students, Assistant Principal, and Principal to ensure students receive timely support and guidance.
HOME-BASE: High School
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
FLSA STATUS: Nonexempt
PAY RATE: $100/DAY PAID THROUGH EDUSTAFF. Must be a current employee of EDUStaff or willing to become an employee of EDUStaff.
Average Work Week: Every day from 10:05 -2:35 (Monday-Friday) that students are scheduled to be in school. This position will not be scheduled to work during breaks, holidays, professional development days, etc.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Supervise and support students who are temporarily assigned to the office or require additional adult assistance.
- Build positive relationships with middle school students while maintaining clear expectations and accountability.
- Communicate regularly with the Dean of Students, Assistant Principal, and Principal regarding student needs and concerns.
- Monitor students completing academic work while in the office setting.
- Provide supervision during transitions and other times as needed.
- Assist with attendance, student check-ins, and other office support duties as requested.
- Respond calmly and professionally to unexpected situations while maintaining flexibility throughout the school day.
- Support a positive school culture focused on student success.
- Establish effective, positive relationships with students, parents, teachers, other support staff, and administrators
- Apply sound principles of learning and motivation in the planning, implementation and assessment phases of instructional delivery
- Utilize a variety of quality classroom management techniques to maintain a highly productive learning environment
- Review special needs of students and emergency procedures
- Available to substitute as classroom teacher as needs arise
- Maintains as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school/classroom to which he/she is assigned
- Follows all policies, rules, and procedures of the school/classroom
- Maintains confidentiality of all school-related matters
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Preferred ability to meet certification requirements as a substitute through MDE
- Ability to communicate well at various levels with students, parents, and school personnel
- Evidence of a positive attitude and human relation skills
- Evidence of high standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity in personal and professional matters
- High level of flexibility
- Eligible to serve as a substitute teacher in the State of Michigan.
- Experience working with middle school-aged students preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm, organized, and solution-focused in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexible, dependable, and comfortable adapting to changing daily needs.
