Finance Director Job Description
The Director of Finance is the organization's senior finance leader — a strategic and hands-on leader who oversees the full financial health of the affiliate. This role combines high-level financial oversight (budgeting, board reporting, audit management, financial strategy) with active participation in day-to-day accounting operations (accounts payable and receivable, payroll support, grant billing, and financial reporting).
Finance Director Primary Duties
- Maintain the integrity of financial information
- Complete biweekly payroll process
- Administer regular accounting process via data by entering data into QuickBooks desktop
- Reconciling bank statements
- Provide financial information for various management purposes, respond to vendor & customer inquiries
- Gather info, organize data collection and complete workpaper for annual audit submission
- Lead the annual external audit process, serving as the primary liaison with auditors and ensuring the submission is completed and filed in a timely manner
- Assist with and review the organization's Form 990 in coordination with auditors or external tax advisors
- Preparation of monthly and annual sales tax returns
- Produce monthly financial reports and meet with staff to reconcile and ensure accuracy prior to review with Director of Operations and presentation at monthly Finance Committee meeting
- Maintain banking and insurance relationships including annual renewals as needed with Director of Operations
- Home Owners Association (HOA) billing, banking, expenses recording
- Reading, reporting and completing accounting processes related to grants and Tax Incremental Financing (TIF)
- Ensure accounting process related to mortgage payments with outside mortgage service provider is completed on a monthly basis
- Develop, maintain and review of cash flow forecasting
- Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department directors and leadership team
- Identify financial risks and opportunities and provide recommendations to leadership
- Support strategic planning by modeling financial scenarios for new programs, capital projects, and organizational growth
- Ensure ongoing compliance with nonprofit financial regulations, IRS requirements, and funderspecific rules
- Maintain and update financial policies and internal controls
- Additional duties as needed
- Supervise Accounting Assistant
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting preferred
- At least six years of experience in a related accounting field
- Experience with QuickBooks accounting software desktop version
- Proficiency in computer systems / technology
- Previous non-profit accounting experience including working with auditor (preferred, not required)
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team environment and promote a positive working environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Able to manage multiple tasks efficiently
Physical Demands and Work Environment

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time and be able to move about inside the office to access filing cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer and must have the ability to use hands to handle, control or feel objects or controls and reach with hands and arms.
- Constantly communicate and exchange information with team members and must be able to effectively communicate correct information. Be able to meet with customers, stakeholders, teammates, and project teams in person as required.
- Read/comprehend, write, communicate orally, reasoning and analytical abilities, and mental flexibility.
- Occasionally will move objects up to 20 pounds.
- Occasionally climb stairs, bend, squat, kneel, crouch, and reach above shoulder to access materials and/or documentation.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus to compare and distinguish accounting and administrative data.
- Hearing ability to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking level with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make discrimination in sound.
- Work Environment
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a typical interior/office work environment. Occasionally may be on a construction site.
- Position may involve extended work hours.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be higher on a construction site.

Pay Range: $65,000 - $85,000
