Velo Kids and Park Township Bring Back Wheelie Scary Ride with a New Costume Parade

Halloween and bikes are coming together again this fall as Velo Kids and Park Township bring back its annual Wheelie Scary Ride on Saturday, October 10, from 4-6 p.m. at the Cooper VanWieren Trail.

More than 500 people joined Velo Kids for last year’s Wheelie Scary celebration, making it one of the organization’s favorite community events of the year. This year, families can expect all the things that make Wheelie Scary special- bikes, costumes, trails, music, food and plenty of Halloween fun... with a new costume parade added to the festivities.

“Wheelie Scary is one of those events that reminds us how much fun it can be when a whole community gets outside together,” said Emily Bierma, Communications and Development Manager for Velo Kids. “You see little kids on balance bikes, older kids flying around the trails, parents riding alongside their kids, and everyone showing up in the most creative costumes. It’s just a really fun afternoon.”

The family-friendly event is open to riders of all ages and abilities. Families are invited to bring their bikes, helmets and favorite Halloween costumes and enjoy the Cooper VanWieren Trail and activity areas throughout the afternoon.

And if your child doesn't have a bike, Velo Kids' Bike Library has bikes and helmets available to borrow, making it possible for more kids to join the fun.

Wheelie Scary is more than a Halloween event. It reflects Velo Kids’ mission to get more kids outside and on bikes, giving children opportunities to build skills, confidence and independence while experiencing the simple joy of riding.

“We want kids to have the chance to be kids... to get outside, enjoy the awesome trails at Cooper VanWieren, ride with their friends, and have a whole lot of fun,” said Ann Blizzard, Park Township Parks and Recreation Director, “Wheelie Scary is a pretty great excuse to do all of that in a Halloween costume.”
