Under the direction of the Principal Shopping District Coordinator, and serving the Principal Shopping District Board of Directors, the Marketing and Event Assistant is responsible for assisting in all aspects of event planning, marketing and promotions for Downtown Holland and the Holland Farmers Market.

Examples of Duties

  1. Assists in the development, planning, marketing, and execution of special events throughout the year to promote Downtown Holland and the Holland Farmers Market as unique and vibrant destinations where all visitors and members of the community feel welcome.
  2. Develops, generates and maintains detailed work plans, participation forms, schedules, budgets, and reports for all events, alongside finding and training volunteers, procuring vendors and supplies, and providing onsite management at all events.
  3. Assists with graphic design projects to promote Downtown Holland and the Holland Farmers Market, including event posters, flyers, signage, print and digital advertisements, and graphics for social media.
  4. Works closely with personnel from other City of Holland Departments to guarantee that events follow City policies and procedures and to ensure the safety of events by obtaining necessary approvals and assistance with logistics.
  5. Maintains the Downtown Holland and Holland Farmers Market websites, including adding events to the event calendars, keeping business and vendor listings up to date, and writing copy as necessary.
  6. Communicates effectively with all Downtown Holland and Holland Farmers Market stakeholders, vendors, and event sponsors to ensure their familiarity with upcoming events, marketing plans, and promotional efforts.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

  1. The job requires knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality, Tourism Management, Marketing or a closely related field.
  2. At least one year of professional experience in corporate, non-profit, or municipal event management is required.
  3. Strong writing skills suited for a variety of different platforms, including social media, press releases, and newsletters.
  4. Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with tact, patience and professionalism.
  5. Willingness and ability to think critically, take initiative and carry tasks through to completion with little oversight, while at the same time working as a team player with staff and volunteers to ensure the success of events and marketing efforts.
  6. Strong experience and active engagement on popular social media platforms, like Facebook and Instagram.
  7. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft office, online ticketing platforms, and website content management systems required.
  8. Excellent organizational skills with ability to organize information with attention to detail and excellent follow through, while handling multiple projects simultaneously.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:

  1. Normal office environment with little discomfort due to noise, dirt, dust and the like.
  2. Requires lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 40 pounds, walking or standing for extended periods of time, and the ability to withstand exposure to the outdoor environment for extended periods during special events.
  3. Work schedule will vary as warranted by events and as directed by the Marketing and Promotions Coordinator. Typical work hours will fall within the regular business hours of Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Weekend and evening hours are required during special events.
