Work Schedule: Full-time full-year (AM shift)

Collective Bargaining Unit:  Hamilton Custodial/Maintenance Association (HCMA)

Pay Scale: Per Collective Bargaining Agreement ($1.25/hour premium)

Job Summary:

The role of the Master Custodian is to support the Custodial Services Supervisor in the duties and responsibilities as defined below. This position is primarily assigned to the Middle School and athletic facilities and is an AM position. This role needs to be flexible, able to work with a split schedule, and adjust to additional hours as needed by the Custodial Services Supervisor. The Master Custodian is a self-starter, self-directed, and has the ability to work well with others. 

 

Essential Functions of the job:

The following are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by a person in this position. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties that may be performed by such a person.

  • Performs the traditional duties and responsibilities of a District and any additional "on call" or "emergency needs" during normal shift during the workweek.
  • Assists the Custodial Services Supervisor (when needed) to identify and coordinate daily substitute staffing needs and the coordination of support.
  • Assists the Custodial Services Supervisor (when needed) with supply ordering and supply delivery.
  • Complete light maintenance work as assigned.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with other custodial and district staff.
  • Maintains relationships with district leadership/administrative/supervisory staff to ensure two-way communications to foster collaboration and problem-solving.
  • Supports main campus snow removal as needed. Must be capable of using a district tractor, walk-behind snowblowers, and the application of snowmelt.
  • Fills in for district staff responsible for snow removal due to employee absence.
  • Ability to be developed into the lead for district gym floor refinishing. Will be responsible for wood floor prep and finish application.
  • Fill in for the Custodial Services Supervisor during extended absences or vacation periods.
  • Develops an atmosphere of trust, respect, interest, and enthusiasm within the school.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Custodial Services Supervisor.

Other functions of the job include but are not limited to the following:

  • Adhere to all policies of the District.
  • On-call December-March for snow removal or emergency needs during the normal weekday shift. Weekend responsibilities do not apply to the Master Custodian
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers, supervisor, administrators, and school community members.
  • Promptly return phone calls and answer emails.
  • Participate in appropriate professional activities/training when necessary.

 

Knowledge Skills and Ability Required:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

  • 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED required, college or trade school classes preferred.
  • Possess good habits, character, and attendance records.
  • Be neat in appearance.
  • Detail-oriented - Ability to pay attention to the minute details of a project or task
  • Be able to speak, read and write at a level of proficiency that permits satisfactory job performance.
  • Be capable and demonstrate the establishment and maintenance of harmonious effective relationships with staff, supervisors, and co-workers.
  • Knowledge of school and State of Michigan policies and procedures.
  • Ability to manage/support change.
  • Ability to perform complex and technical tasks.
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of organizational and management practices as applied to operational needs.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and Local laws, policies, rules, and regulations as they relate to the custodial operations of the District.
  • Possess experience in custodial and maintenance work to carry out the assigned duties preferred.
  • Possess a willingness to learn new job skills.

  • Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word  
  • Frequently required to stand and walk.  
  • Requires both indoor and outdoor participation year-round.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50+ pounds.  
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, and hazards.

Evaluation:

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy, the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and administrative guidelines on the evaluation of personnel.
