Job Overview
We are currently looking for an Associate Product Engineer to join our team onsite in Holland, MI. This position is a salaried exempt, P1 or P2 depending on experience, reporting to Nick Thompson.
As an Associate Product Engineer, you will:
Performs engineering work in operations, production, or maintenance environments. Responsible for designing and developing new or existing products, components, or assemblies including applying engineering principles to develop products that meet customer technical/functional specifications as well as manufacturing cost/efficiency requirements. Supporting and participating in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototypes. May be involved with designing product specific manufacturing production processes and equipment. Requires conceptual knowledge of theories, practices, and procedures within a job discipline. Performs routine assignments using existing procedures. Receives instruction, guidance and direction from more senior level roles. Entry level to a professional career progression.
Job Responsibilities
- With limited assistance from senior engineers or manager, works on individually assigned projects to design and/or develop new products, processes, and tooling, or improvements to existing products, processes, or tooling, utilizing engineering principles and experience. Provides documented analyses and recommendations of processes to implement to senior engineer or manager.
- Works with Manufacturing Engineering to determine best process to minimize labor, material, and overhead costs, and assure manufacturability to increase market share and profitability. Utilizes engineering principles and tools to calculate and evaluate alternative product designs, tooling, manufacturing processes, or equipment for least possible production costs. Utilizes personal computer (PC) and keyboard/mouse to complete cost analysis; transmits data to accounting for completion of financial analysis.
- Participates in investigation of alternate materials to minimize labor and overhead costs. Determines proper material selection, through engineering analysis, with aid of computer-aided design (CAD) and other engineering tools.
- Utilizing PC-based spreadsheets for analysis, participates in "make versus buy" feasibility studies. Presents documented analysis of purchased costs versus manufactured costs to senior engineer or manager; makes recommendations for vertical integration.
- Creates and processes Engineering Change Orders (ECOs). Prepares documentation for Requests for Quotes for tooling and equipment required to produce parts to specification. Utilizes statistical techniques, tolerance analysis, Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, process potential studies, and other engineering techniques to assure products will meet customer requirements.
- During design and building of tooling and equipment, frequently travels to supplier sites to review progress.
- Works with Engineering Designers/Detailers to ensure form, fit, and function of product designs, utilizing CAD and PCs, via keyboard/mouse.
- Develops engineering detail and assembly documentation to support tooling quotations, manufacturing processes, and cost analysis for final product implementation.
- Develops prototypes to be used for engineering performance and reliability testing. Coordinates testing and analysis of materials, processes, and prototypes. Prepares test plans and requests; monitors tests and evaluates test performance to ensure adherence to agency and industry standards.
- Analyzes competitive products by evaluating materials, manufacturing processes, product performance, and packaging to determine competitiveness of product offerings.
- Using PC-based software, prepares all documentation for and writes Request for Expenditure (RFE) for justification of capital expenditures. Presents RFE for approval to various levels of management.
- Works with Quality Assurance to ensure all quality aspects of product design and manufacturing are met, by applying manufacturing engineering principles.
- Assures all required International Standards Organization (ISO) and/or Haworth Quality System documentation (i.e., Processes and Method Instructions) is in place and current.
- Contacts and occasionally travels to customer and supplier sites, agencies, universities, and related manufacturing operations, to obtain information relative to existing products, purchased parts, material selections, or manufacturing processes.
- Maintains up-to-date, state-of-the-art knowledge in areas of materials, CAD systems, analysis tools, manufacturing engineering methods, and processes. Shares this information with other members via training and/or day-to-day contact.
- Assists with assembly and installation of tooling and or equipment, using power and hand tools. Lifts/moves parts weighing up to 70 pounds.

Required Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor's degree of Science in Engineering or relevant field of study.
- Education Equivalency: Associate degree plus 2 years related exp OR 4 years professional engineering work experience.
Additional Requirements:
- PC and keyboard/mouse skills required.
- Current and continuing right to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
- Ability to work in Holland, MI without relocation assistance.

- Demonstrated ability to creatively design, analyze, and document product designs on multiple projects.
- Design, development, and project management skills.
- Ability for innovative technical accomplishments, as demonstrated through prior design drawings, patent awards, technical publications, and market success.
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of CAD (design) systems and analysis procedures.
- Ability to work cross-functionally to ensure products and materials produced meet functional requirements over life of product.
- Ability to work in development-oriented team environment.
- Must be knowledgeable of applicable global standards such as American National Standards Institute (ANSI) drafting practices, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GDT) and Canadian Government Test Standard (CGSB).
- Ability to occasionally travel overnight away from corporate offices, including internationally.
