Summary:

 

In this dual-role position, you will play a vital role in supporting students both virtually and in person. As an Online Learning Mentor, you will help guide students through their virtual coursework, monitor their academic progress, and provide ongoing encouragement and support in a flexible learning environment. In addition to this, you will also serve as a face-to-face tutor, offering direct, in-person academic support in math and English language arts on Wednesday mornings.

 

This hands-on tutoring opportunity allows you to work one-on-one or in small groups to clarify key concepts, reinforce foundational skills, and build student confidence in core academic areas. Your presence and support will make a meaningful difference in students’ learning experiences, especially for those who benefit most from in-person instruction and personal connection.

 

Your dedication, relationship-building, and instructional support—both online and in person—will contribute significantly to each student’s academic success.

 

Location:  Sandyview Learning Center

Reports to: Virtual School Principal 

Rate of Pay:  $15.33/hour (base of Class I Support Staff)

Start Date: 2025-2026 School Year

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

As an Online Learning Mentor and In-Person Tutor, you will be responsible for:

  • Conducting weekly two-way communication with students (sometimes face-to-face) to ensure their understanding of course material, address any concerns, and provide encouragement and support.

  • Navigating various online courses used by the district, including Canvas, Michigan Virtual, Edmentum, Edgenuity, Calvert, etc., to answer student questions and troubleshoot technical issues.

  • Documenting attendance and student progress accurately and consistently.

  • Ensuring pupils have access to appropriate technology by troubleshooting technical issues and working with district personnel to resolve any hardware or software problems.

  • Facilitating access to district teachers of record for courses by communicating student needs and concerns and coordinating communication between students and teachers.

  • Managing crucial student count day communications, compliance, and documentation to ensure accurate data reporting.

  • Assisting with record keeping, including maintaining student files and updating information as needed.

  • Verifying student schedules to ensure they are enrolled in the correct courses and taking classes aligned with their academic goals.

  • Providing troubleshooting assistance for online students who experience technical difficulties or need help navigating online learning platforms.

  • Monitoring student attendance and progress and collaborating with students and parents to develop plans to get back on track if they are falling behind.

  • Completing the Canvas Mentoring class and ongoing professional development opportunities to stay up-to-date on best practices in online learning and mentoring.

  • Providing direct, face-to-face tutoring in math and/or English language arts on Wednesdays from 9:45 AM to 11:45 AM, helping students strengthen core skills, complete assignments, prepare for assessments, and grow in academic confidence.

  • Collaborating with teachers and support staff to identify students in need of tutoring and plan targeted instruction.

  • Creating a welcoming, encouraging environment that supports student learning and builds strong relationships.

  • Assuming other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or high school equivalency diploma
  • Ability to relate well with students, staff, and parents in a positive manner
  • Ability to communicate clearly in verbal and written form
  • Ability to follow written and oral communication
  • Ability to problem-solve
  • Ability to read and understand instructional materials presented to students
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with all students, staff and school community
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district and BOE policies

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Previous work experience with K-12 students, including students with special needs
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • Title I - Paraprofessional Qualifications
    • College degree; OR
    • Completed 60 college credit hours; OR
    • Achieve a passing score on one of the following MDE-approved formal state academic assessments:
      • MTTC Basic Skills
      • ETS -  460
      • WorkKeys - Minimum scores of Reading for Information (4); Applied Math (4); Writing (3)
      • SAT - at least 480 on evidence-based reading and writing and 530 on math
      • ACT (between 1/1/1989 - 10/1/2017) - minimum scores of Reading (22); Combined English and Writing (22); Math (22)
      • MME (between 1/1/2007 -1/31/2015) - minimum scores of Reading (1108); Writing (1129); Math (1116) 

 

Hours: Currently 29 hours/week, On-site Wednesdays 9:45 - 11:45 when school is in session. The remaining hours are to be completed virtually. The position schedule will follow the Hamilton Community Schools school calendar.
