Critter Barn | Guest Experience & Retail Support

Pay Rate: $14–$16 per hour

Status: Part-Time, Year-Round (seasonal hour fluctuations)

Summer: Up to 30 hours per week

Off-season: hours vary based on visitor volume and programming

Schedule:

March–Memorial Day: Tuesday–Saturday, 10:00 AM–5:00 PM

After Memorial Day: Monday–Saturday, 10:00 AM–5:00 PM

We are seeking someone who can work the majority of open shifts, with additional staff filling remaining hours.


Position Overview

The Welcome Desk Greeter is the first point of contact for guests visiting Critter Barn. This role is essential to creating a warm, inviting, and organized guest experience for the general public, school groups, field trips, and Critter Crew members.

Working closely with the Education Coordinator and Programming Coordinator, this position supports daily guest flow, retail operations, and the overall atmosphere of the Welcome Center. The ideal candidate is friendly, reliable, self-motivated, and enjoys working with people in a farm-based environment.


Key Responsibilities

Guest Experience & Front Desk

- Serve as the welcoming face of Critter Barn for all guests

- Greet visitors warmly and provide clear information about farm activities, rules, and schedules

- Monitor guest flow and assist with crowd management

- Support guest experiences for the general public, field trips, programs, and Critter Crew

- Answer basic questions in person and by phone

Store & Inventory Management

- Assist with merchandise sales and point-of-sale operations

- Maintain organized, attractive retail displays

- Take inventory, restock items, and rotate merchandise as needed

- Clean and change out stock seasonally

- Communicate inventory needs to supervisors

Operations & Facility Support

- Maintain a clean, welcoming Welcome Center and surrounding areas

- Follow all Critter Barn safety, guest service, and operational protocols

- Assist with coordinating daily activities, events, and workshops as needed

- Work collaboratively with staff to ensure smooth daily operations


Staff Goals & Expectations

Critter Barn staff are expected to:

- Be friendly, positive, and professional at all times

- Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all guests

- Communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and visitors

- Take initiative and work independently when needed


Reporting Structure

- Works closely with the Education Coordinator and Programming Coordinator

- Reports to Critter Barn leadership


Qualifications

- High school diploma or equivalent

- Strong communication and organizational skills

- Customer service or retail experience preferred, but not required

- Self-motivated with the ability to manage tasks independently

- Ability to adapt and problem-solve in a dynamic environment

- Interest in agriculture, education, or nonprofit work is a plus

- Experience working with farm animals and/or outdoors is helpful but not required.


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

- Ability to work in varied weather conditions

- Welcome Center includes a small office:

- Heated above freezing in winter

- No air conditioning in summer

- Standing for extended periods

- Light lifting, cleaning, and organizing

Employment Terms

This is a position classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Employment with Critter Barn is at-will, meaning that either the employee or Critter Barn may terminate the relationship at any time, with or without cause and with or without notice.
