Barbara Lee VanHorssen Honored with the Disability Network Lakeshore 2025 Ability Award

Holland, MI – In a heartwarming celebration at Ivy House in Saugatuck, Barbara Lee VanHorssen, Founder and CEO of the Momentum Center for Social Engagement, was honored with the prestigious Disability Network Lakeshore 2025 Ability Award on Thursday, April 10, 2025, in front of nearly 130 community members.

VanHorssen was selected as this year’s recipient by the Ability Award Selection Committee, led by Carrie Dattels, Director of Disability and Accessibility Resources at Hope College. “The Ability Award is one of the many ways we advance the mission of Disability Network Lakeshore by honoring those in West Michigan who are dedicated to the vision of communities without barriers,” said Dattels. “VanHorssen has dedicated her life to creating opportunities for marginalized individuals, particularly those with disabilities, addictions, and mental illness, to engage in a safe and welcoming community. We are thrilled to recognize her as this year’s Ability Award recipient.”

This recognition highlights VanHorssen’s tireless efforts in establishing the Momentum Center for Social Engagement, a nonprofit organization that offers social and recreational programs for teens and adults with mental illness, addictions, and disabilities. Membership at the center costs just $1 per year, covering all activities and outings. The center promotes a high level of autonomy, allowing individuals to opt in or out of activities as they choose, and emphasizes social integration. This approach plays a key role in dismantling stigma and stereotypes.

“While I’ve always had a passion for marginalized and disenfranchised people, I was inspired to imagine the Momentum Center for Social Engagement after my son was diagnosed with schizophrenia and subsequent cognitive impairments,” said VanHorssen. “His diagnosis made my work starting a nonprofit focused on social justice and human rights deeply personal. My desire to create an organization where I could connect people who wanted to make a difference with opportunities to do so became the Momentum Center – a place that sees the whole person and challenges the community to become more welcoming and hospitable.”

Parents and guardians of individuals engaged with the Momentum Center report that their loved ones are learning new skills, gaining confidence, and engaging more with the community. The center has also measurably improved the lives and well-being of people experiencing disabilities, mental health issues, and addiction. Data indicates a significant reduction in members’ feelings of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. Community Mental Health professionals have noted a decrease in the services required for Momentum Center members, freeing up resources to assist other residents of Ottawa County.

Since its inception in 2011, the Ability Award has recognized over 100 nominees from Ottawa and Allegan counties who are committed to the vision of communities without barriers. Their work, spanning more than 50 years, has led to the development of essential supports, including transit systems, world-class housing options, impactful advocacy for systemic change, and much more. The nominees of the Ability Award truly embody the spirit of the saying, "It takes a village." Our communities are richer thanks to their invaluable contributions.
