Idamdra Fegel, a sophomore saxophone player at Black River Public School in Holland, is the 2026 winner of the Holland Concert Jazz Orchestra’s Student Soloist Showcase. A feature of the HCJO season since 2019, the Student Soloist Showcase is open to Michigan high school students to win a scholarship as well as a featured soloist performance with the HCJO. Idamdra’s audition placed him at the top of the audition list, and he will be performing with the HCJO at their April 19 concert at the Park Theatre in Holland.

Idamdra Fegel started playing clarinet in 6th grade, then switched to saxophone the following summer. His passion for the saxophone has grown continuously ever since. He is even more passionate about jazz. He currently plays with the Jazz Lab, Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Combo and Symphonic Band, at Black River. He also helps younger students in the beginning band. As a Freshman, he was asked to join Hope College’s Jazz Arts Collective where he has since gotten to study with Professor Shipley. He is studying with several saxophone teachers and is always looking for opportunities to play and learn from well-seasoned musicians. Idamdra can frequently be found, on warm summer days, performing on the streets of downtown Holland. His current career plans involve music in some way.

The Holland Concert Jazz Orchestra was founded in 2018 with the mission to “educate, advocate, and perform” quality jazz music in the West Michigan lakeshore area and beyond. The Student Soloist Showcase began in 2019, and every winner has gone on to pursue music, and specifically jazz, at a major university. The first winner, Judah Guerra, is currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program at the University of Texas, Austin.

The April 19 concert will begin at 3:00 p.m., with tickets available through the Park Theatre website. All seats are $10, with students grades 6-12 admitted for free with student ID.
