City of Zeeland launches Citizen’s Academy

The City of Zeeland announces the rollout of the inaugural session of Zeeland’s Citizen’s Academy. This new program is designed to provide Zeelanders an opportunity to expand their knowledge of the structure and functions of their city government. Sessions will offer an in-depth look at the fundamentals of the City’s administration and library, finance, IT, streets, parks, cemeteries and utilities, public safety, community development, downtown and marketing. Additional topics covered will include the basics of local government, elections, local history and more.

The purpose of Zeeland’s Citizen’s Academy is to: educate residents, encourage new leaders and volunteers, and spread the ZEEL! “We’re excited to get to know more of our community members through this program, and help them get to know us, too,” commented Mayor Kevin Klynstra.

Zeeland’s Citizen’s Academy is an ideal program for community leaders, current or potential future appointed or elected officials, curious residents and students with an interest in local affairs. Participants will increase their knowledge of City operations while demonstrating their commitment to the community, networking with fellow community members, engaging with City staff and becoming better equipped to help shape the future of the community. Participants must be 16 years or older and must meet one of the following criteria: resident of the City of Zeeland, utility customer of the Zeeland Board of Public Works, or work at an employer located within the City of Zeeland.

The City of Zeeland Citizen’s Academy will be held on Wednesdays, July 10, 17, 24, 31 and August 7, 2024, from 6-8:30 PM. Participation in 80% of the program is a requirement for graduation (4/5 full sessions). The application window will open April 1, 2024 and will remain open until the program is full. Admittance in this program is on a first-come, first-served basis - pending all participation requirements are met. Applicants will be notified within one week if they have been accepted into the program. The inaugural class of Zeeland’s Citizen’s Academy will have a maximum of 15 participants.

Beginning April 1st, applications will be available online https://www.cityofzeeland.com/573/City-of-Zeeland-Citizens-Academy. Community members are also welcome to visit City Hall (21 S. Elm Street) during business hours and request a paper application.
