"Cultivating West Michigan" Exhibit opens at Dekker Huis Museum

The Zeeland Historical Society is thrilled to announce the opening of its latest exhibit, "Cultivating West Michigan," on display from June 2024 through February 2025 at the Dekker Huis Museum. This engaging and educational exhibit delves into the rich history of agriculture in West Michigan, exploring its developments, challenges, and future opportunities.

"Cultivating West Michigan" invites visitors to reflect on agriculture's significant role in our daily lives. Through a captivating collection of stories, artifacts, and hands-on activities, the exhibit offers a unique opportunity to learn about the evolution of farming in the region. Attendees will gain insight into the innovations that have shaped agriculture and consider the future of farming in West Michigan.

“In curating this exhibit, the many ways agriculture is intertwined with our lives stood out,” said exhibit Curator, Audrey Rojo. “Historically, agriculture was a community endeavor and shaped the culture of our region, even as increasingly fewer of us engage with farming. From food, to sustainability, to technology, farming touches all of us still today.”

"We are excited to present 'Cultivating West Michigan' to our community," added Katelyn VerMerris, Director of the Zeeland Historical Society. "This exhibit not only celebrates our agricultural heritage but also encourages visitors to engage with the history and future of farming in a meaningful way."

The exhibit will be open to the public from June 2024 to February 2025. The hours of the Dekker Huis Museum are Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The Dekker Huis Museum is located at 37 E. Main, Zeeland, MI 49464. There is no admission to the museum, but the recommended donation is $5 per person.

The exhibit and tractor show are made possible through the Sow and Grow Sponsors-Zeeland Farm Services, DeBruyn Seed Store, John and Sally Janssen, Townline Poultry Farm, and Hop Insurance Agency-Farm Bureau Insurance.
