Harbor Humane shares plans for $3.6M expansion, new adoption center
Harbor Humane Society will soon embark on a capital campaign toward significant renovations at 14345 Bagley St. — including the construction of a new adoption center.
The project is expected to cost $3.6 million. The organization's site plan will appear before the Olive Township Board of Trustees on Dec. 18.
“Our goal is to make the experience better for our animals, for the public and for our staff,” Executive Director Jen Self-Aulgur told The Sentinel on Dec. 15. “We’ve continued to grow. We’ve run out of storage. We’ve run out of staff space. (We're trying) to make better use of our campus and our facilities, including a new building to help keep the animals less stressed, healthier and happier.”
The nonprofit hopes to open the new adoption center in roughly a year, according to Self-Aulgur.
“We’re being a lot more intentional with our animal spaces, and ultimately looking not to increase the quantity of animals that we hold ... but the quality of care,” Self-Aulgur said. “We're always working to (give them) the best possible experience, so by having more room and more separate spaces, we’ll be able to achieve that.”
The new center will be a front-facing building welcoming adopters. Self-Aulgur hopes the new space will be more welcoming and less crowded than the current facility.
More information about the project and fundraising campaign is expected in the coming months. Questions can be directed to Self-Aulgur at executive@harborhumane.org.
