A Stitch in Time. Lavina Cappon’s Tulip Time Legacy

April 26 through September 16 explores the impact Lavina Cappon had on the authentic costume designs incorporated in Tulip Time and still adhered to today. Lavina, who was the second daughter of Isaac and his second wife, Jacoba, was a Holland Public school teacher. The exhibition explores her influence in shaping Tulip Times’ strict dress protocol.

This is the first major exhibit the Museum is offering in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Cappon House. Anniversary programming began at the beginning of the year and will continue through December.

The Cappon family and their home has had an important impact on the community. Isaac Cappon the patriarch, served as Holland’s first mayor in 1867 and again in 1870, 1874 and 1879 and often put the needs of the community first. Says Ricki Levine, executive director of the Holland Museum. “The Holland fire of 1871 destroyed their home, the Cappon & Bertsch Tannery, and the Third Reformed Church where Cappon was deacon. Cappon chose first to rebuild the church, then tannery and finally the family home in that order. Lavina Cappon was civic minded as well, and her work on behalf of Tulip Time is one of the examples of her dedication to the community”.

Levine continues, “Lavina was instrumental in making the family home a museum, working with the City of Holland to do so before her death. We are pleased to highlight her contribution to the community as part of this yearlong celebration”.
